Whitewater Backcountry Report

No matter if you are an expert or just a novice looking to take up ski touring the backcountry always deserves respect and especially at this time of year. Having spent the last three days in the backcountry around Whitewater on various routes I can tell you that even though the resort is in great shape (especially when compared to other ski resorts) the backcountry still has a long way to go. There are endless obstacles and hazards currently poking their nasty little heads out looking to take you down the fist chance they get. It could be a rock, downed tree, creek or even the top twelve inches of a buried four foot tree. Kind of like the one that put my cranium on an express train to "face-plant-ville" on Sunday afternoon. It was not pretty, but I survived and skied away unharmed except for my pride which I left behind. We've still go 16+ weeks of skiing to be had and winter has just started, so patience is the name of the game. Things are just getting good so ski smart, ski in control and expect the unexpected. Be sure to use your brain when you venture out, take is slow, get your ski legs and skinning legs in shape and be sure to pack more than that fancy new gear - pack your common sense. For details, photos and conditions on the three days of ski touring around Whitewater which included Evening Ridge, 5 mile, Acidophilus and Goat Slide give a click here.BackcountrySkiingCanada.com
