Watching Whitewater Weather
"That was my best day. Ever." So said the Australian lad I gave a lift into town to from the hill a few days ago. He left his home in the outback, and temps in the low 40s, just a week prior. Truth was, the day for me and many other local folks was only so-so. We'd had a few fresh cms but it was far from what those of us who ski here regularly would call "best." I told him to maintain his stoke and prepare for even more good things to come. Whitewater would deliver.
The season thus far has been a bit of a roller coaster weather-wise. Things were looking good before the lifts opened then we got hit by the pineapple express. High temps and non-frozen precip. brought on a civic-scale malaise. People commiserating in the streets, shops and bars. Then, slow but sure, a few 5cm days, a 15cm day and then (my personal fave) a forecasted 5cms that turned into more like 15-20. Things are looking up.
Watching Whitewater weather in wintertime is a little like being a superfan and loving a pro sports team (imagine hockey or football). You love your team through thick and thin. And it's the same kind of long-term relationship. Lucky for us who call it our home hill (and those who visit) Whitewater is a winning, powder-laden team.
I hope I see that Aussie guy on the first chair tomorrow morning. I think he's about to have his new best day. Ever.
