Time to be Cautious as the Hazard Continues to Stay Elevated
Since our last episode, we have had two major avalanche cycles. Between December 20-23rd we had close too 100cm of heavy snowfall which put a significant load on an already weak snowpack. During this time we saw avalanches up to size 3, some taking out 15-20-year-old trees!
After this, we saw roughly 20cm of really light snow and surface hoar which was again buried yesterday by 30cm of heavy snow and created a touchy storm slab.
We are expecting to receive a good amount of snow between now and the end of next week so be aware the avalanche hazard will be HIGH as this storm slab continues to build.
We still have spots in our Managing Avalanche Terrain course on Saturday January the 11th, and also be advised it is our Jr Free Ski competition next weekend and some of Sleeper and Blast runs will be periodically closed for the venue.
