The Thirst for First
Here we are with February upon us, the days are getting longer, the snowpack deeper and the legs stronger. If you haven't calculated how to maximize your returns on natures abundance you can count on the fact that others have... for some there is only one way to respond to a powder day, for the obsessed there is only one way to begin every day. Not for the lazy or weak of heart—it requires skill, precision, and careful planning. And so marks the fourth installment of our Speakski series*.

First Chair
noun | \ ˈfərst cher\
Coveted by skiers and snowboarders alike especially during heavy snowstorm cycles, first chair remains an elusive proposition for the majority. By chair here we are referring to the chairs on ski resort lifts, the first of which provides unvetted access to untracked powder or freshly groomed corduroy. For first chairpersons there are no leftovers and no seeking out powder stashes—it’s all there for the carving. The opportunity, however, is fleeting and upon completion of first run all privileges are revoked, this is perhaps what makes first chair so enticing.
Attaining first chair requires commitment, strategy, organization, perseverance and at times stealth. Here are some tips to help you in your quest:
- Arrive at the ski hill at least one- to one-and-a-half hours before the resort opens.
- Never tell anyone what time you plan to arrive and that you are vying for first chair—stay calm and cool.
- Work as a team, have your buddy or buddies (on Summit) line up as soon as you hit the resort, if it’s a long wait take shifts.
- Dress appropriately
- Have your friends bring warm beverages from the Fresh Tracks cafe.
- Plan your next move. When you get off the chair you have only moments to buckle up, make way and begin your run of choice before second chair arrives, you've worked hard for this moment don't let them scoop you.
At Whitewater Ski Resort there will be two first chairs everyday and whether it's Silver King or Summit you'll have to get in early if you are going to wear the crown on one of our infamous powder days.
