The Taste of Powder Days

After you’ve left Whitewater for the day, and your legs are tired from shredding the endlessly deep powder, you’re hungry. And you’re thirsty. If you were riding right up until the last chair, and you didn’t find time to grab some delicious bowl food from Fresh Tracks Café or share some nachos and a beer in Coal Oil Johnny’s, fear not. There are many options to satiate you when you return to Nelson for an evening of fun and feasting.

Often cited as having more restaurants per capita than Manhattan, Nelson is a veritable hub of delicious and amazing eats. Many restaurants here are proud of sourcing ingredients and products from the local area – with some of them even boasting 100 mile menus. We’re lucky enough to have 3 local breweries producing delicious craft beer, 2 local coffee roasteries, a charcuterie, cheese shop, an array of bakeries, a boutique wine store stocking an array of local BC wines and a huge selection of bars and restaurants offering every cuisine you could possibly imagine.

If you feel like you need to carb-load, you’ve got a big choice of amazing Italian restaurants to choose from, as well as a number of takeaway pizza joints. If spicy food is more your bag, there’s 3 different Indians, 2 Mexican places, a Thai café, a Ramen bar and a Vietnamese restaurant. If you’re looking for something a bit different, you could try Middle Eastern, a steakhouse, Tapas, Eastern European, Bourbon and BBQ or perhaps a farm-to-table bistro. And if you’ve got dietary requirements, don’t worry about it. There’s a dedicated vegan restaurant, and most places in Nelson will happily cater to gluten-free or plant-based diets.

If snacking during après is more your bag, there’s some amazing deals offered between 2-6pm at a lot of bars in town. Grab anything from half price appies and $9 poutine to $4 draft and $9 cocktails.

But the real taste of skiing isn’t in the food you’re eating, it’s in the delicious coldsmoke powder you taste as it sprays you in the face. And one of the other places you can get that outside of the Kootenays, is Japan. That’s why I love to end my day the Japanese way: with a huge platter of sushi and some warming cups of sake.

So next time you want some delicious sushi, head to Kurama Sushi at 491 Baker Street. Open until 8pm every evening and offering a range of vegetarian and vegan options, it’s the perfect place to end your day on the slopes.
