The Low Down on the Brush Down
With Whitewaters deep history, many of us forget about the whole sub alpine ecosystem that lies beneath the 40 ft of annual snowfall. Last year, with our less than traditional total snow accumulation, we were reminded of the not so little twigs and bushes that hibernate under that cold winter layer (maybe more than we like). Our staff is well aware of this pesky yet essential vegetation, which means our brushing team has been working to remove as much as we can for the upcoming season. With some brushing underway already, we have a full schedule lined up for the fall. The wind event in June threw us a curve ball and created new blow down which has mostly been limbed and bucked on most marked runs.
As a rule of thumb, we wait for cool fall temperatures so that the brush has stopped growing completely, making our efforts more effective. Typically this happens in late September early October.
Areas that have already received some brushing this summer:
- Hummer Beginner area
- Lower Sluice Box
- Little Mucker
- Lower Concentrator
- Lower Nugget
* Sections on Upper Bound for Glory have also seen some brushing.
Areas to be brushed beginning the 28th of September through early October:
- Remainder of Nugget
- Remainder of Lower Concentrator
- Lower Jack Pot
- Lower Silver Ledge
- Lower Bonanza
- Lower Motherlode
- Lower Rockers
- Racer line
- Lower Yankee Girl
- Sluice Box
This trail maintenance is an ongoing project for our team with the ultimate goal of opening as much terrain as possible earlier in the season so that we can all get our ski legs ready for the many potential powder days that await us!
