Northern Grease film screening in Nelson
If you've seen the Beyond Boarding bus cruising around Nelson this week, then you might have already taken a peek at their website to see what these guys are all about. With the byline 'Snowboarders Making Positive Change', the passionate young individuals behind this group endeavour to spread interest in environmental and humanitarian work within the snowboarding community. (But skiiers, stay with us here...!)
This Saturday at Expressions cafe, they will be screening their films 'Northern Grease' and 'Belen'. Here's a bit of a run down of what the two are all about.
The crew behind the 'Northern Grease' project spent over 6 months traveling across Canada in a vegetable oil fueled bus, in a bid to understand and highlight Canadian resource extraction practices such as fracking and building transmission lines. Visiting industrial towns along the way, the team interviewed people involved with and affected by the current problems that have arisen as a result of these practices. They also spent a great deal of time with people who use alternative and renewable energy sources to lead lifestyles that present solutions.
Belen follows Tamo Campos and David McKinnon on their quest to give back to developing communities in Peru. After a year of fundraising, the two lads headed to Peru to investigate local aid groups helping to provide affordable shelter for those in need. Through focused interviews and artistic cinematography, this film portrays the story of passions being directed to the service of others.
Throught the films, they hope to inspire local communities to take action on social and environmental justice in BC and beyond. The films are already making their way around the independent and environmental film circuit and with a talented and passionate group of creatives behind the projects, they're sure to make for a worthy viewing experience.
Tickets can be purchased at the door, but you can also RSVP HERE.
