It's the most wonderful time of the year...

You’ve probably heard of an inversion, where the temperature is often milder up high than down in the valley. But it’s not just during those cold snaps that an inversion is a thing of beauty.

With milder temperatures all over western Canada this week, Whitewater is the place to be to ski and soak up the sun. Mornings are still cool, but as the mercury climbs, the snow is softening, making for beautiful spring skiing conditions. The groomers are where it’s at for tasty turns.

I like to linger in the mornings a little longer at this time of year before heading up to the hill and let Mother Nature warm things up a bit first. Mid-morning is the sweet spot to do some laps and work up an appetite for lunch on what is arguably the best patio in the region.

Whitewater’s developed quite the reputation for their tasty eats, but the patio at Coal Oil Johnny’s deserves more mention. Ideally situated to allow the sun to beat down on happy guests, the patio can feel downright summery on a bluebird day regardless of what the thermometer reads. Add in dramatic views of Ymir peak framed by a natural amphitheatre, the amazing contrast of snow so white against a brilliant blue sky, plus colourful guests, and it’s a magical experience you just won’t find anywhere else.

The Whitewater crew has the barbeque fired up too, serving delicious burgers and boar sausages, while the full menu and a selection of Nelson Brewing Company craft beers provides plenty of options. Locally brewed kombucha is also available, plus Nelson’s legendary Oso Negro coffees.

Sunny skies ahead will bring plenty of Vitamin D to coincide with the official start of spring. With only a few weeks to go until the ski season winds down, now’s the time to enjoy the best of both winter and spring all at once.
