Giving Back on its Second Annual Community Day

The forty first year of Whitewater Ski Resort’s operations are off to a great start with substantial snow storms bringing large accumulations to the resort’s happy shredders over the holiday season. With 2017 already off to a snowy start, Whitewater is excited to welcome locals to the second annual Community Day. Set for Friday, January 13, the resort will be offering residents from Kaslo to Castlegar and south to Salmo lift tickets for only $10, with all the money received from lift tickets sold this day being donated back to the community that supports it. Last winter Whitewater was able to raise over $10,000 from the Community Day celebration which was donated to the both the Nelson Cares Society and Avalanche Awareness Beyond the Boundaries (A.A.B.B.S.). This year the resort is hoping to raise even more to support the non-profit organizations the Whitewater Ski Team and The Civic Theatre, as well as once again taking food donations to the Nelson Food Cupboard. The Whitewater Ski Team, which is ski racing club that trains at Whitewater, can use these donated funds to purchase training and racing equipment to assist their goals in building lifelong skiers. “We are delighted that The Civic Theatre will be the beneficiary of Whitewater’s 2nd Annual Community Day on January 13” states Eleanor Stacey, Executive Director of The Civic Theatre. “We have seen tremendous community support in our recent campaign to fundraise for a roll up screen. The funds provided to us from Whitewater’s Community Day will assist us in obtaining the rest of the needed stage drapery, as well as improving the surface of our stage. This project will make our stage available again for community use and we look forward to inviting the community to find more ways to use it, especially when our fibre optic internet connection can be of service.”

Whitewater invites locals residing in the Slocan Valley (Slocan, Winlaw, New Denver, Silverton), Nelson, Castlegar, North Shore (Proctor/Harrop), East Shore (Riondel, Crawford Bay to Creston), Kaslo, and Salmo/Ymir. Guests will need to provide photo ID and either a drivers license or pay stub as proof of residence in order to receive the $10 lift ticket.

There is more fun to mark on your calendar this month with the 8th annual Winter Carnival and Snowball Apres Party happening at the resort Saturday, January 21 and Sunday, January 22, 2017. A full weekend of fun is planned with snow sculpting contests, marshmallow roasting, and the Snowball Apres with an incredible buffet dinner put on by the chefs at Whitewater, live music by Devil’s You Don’t, a torchlight parade and fireworks. To add to the Saturday excitement, NEW this year, Gerick’s Cycle and Ski will be hosting the first ever Gericks Triple Header. As the name suggests this event will be a trifecta of excitement with skiing, snowboarding, bikes and booties. Sunday brings Avalanche Awareness with events such as a snow pit and companion rescue demo as well as backcountry gear showcased from our friends at ROAM. For those in Rossland that want to join the Saturday festivities, Mountain Shuttle is running a shuttle for the day.
