Believe it or not, it's time to be Bear Aware!
Yes, you read that right. A bear has awoken near our Glory Chair terrain. The bear has been wandering around during the day and going back to its den at night. This is unusual winter behavior for a bear and we are hoping that colder, winter temps will prevail and the bear will go back to its den and back into its more usual winter pastime??hibernation. In the meantime, for everyone?? safety (including the bears!) we are asking people to please stay away from the bear and do not disturb it. Also, be very conscious of your food and garbage while skiing, riding the lift and enjoying the Glory terrain, these are the main attractants for bears that conservation officers are called to deal with. We have reported the bear to the local conservation officer and they are monitoring the situation.
Remember:
- If you encounter a bear, do not yell, scream or run as this may provoke it.
- If the bear sees you, speak in a low voice to let the bear know you are human and move away slowly.
- It is also important to ski with a buddy and hoot and holler and make noise so that the bear can hear you coming and is not surprised.
Bears have an extremely good sense of smell and can smell food from over a kilometer away! They also are extremely fast and can run equally as well uphill or down.Re-location seldom works for bears as they want to stay in their home territory, and bears that become highly food-conditioned and habituated to humans are often destroyed because of concerns for human safety. So do a little snow dance so we can all ski some more powder and this beautiful bear can go back to bed!
If you're on the hill and have further questions, don't hesitate to as Ski Patrol, they also have a First Aid room on the Glory side of the mountain, right beside the Fresh Tracks Caf? Express food truck.
