Aprés? Pho sure.
After a hard day on the mountain, I normally can’t resist crawling into the bar for a nice cold beer. Sometimes though, poutine and a pint doesn’t quite cut it. Last week I had just one of those days and so me and a few buddies headed into town to check out what the Yum Son après offering was like.
For anyone who hasn’t yet visited the Viet-Modern restaurant on Victoria St in downtown Nelson, you are in for a treat. A warm, cozy atmosphere and friendly staff greet you as you scurry inside to escape from the cold. We arrived at 4 o'clock – slap bang in the middle of their Après ‘hour’ from 3-5pm.
Whilst I’m normally partial to a hoppy beverage after the slopes, $2 off their entire cocktail menu left my mouth salivating for something tropical and delicious. Our table ordered a Saigon Sour and Su Say Me from the alcoholic cocktail menu, as well as a Mint & Lychee Smash and a Passionfruit Yogi off the softs. Service was quick and the drinks were delectable.
Ski boots off and drinks in hand; food was next on the agenda. As a non-meat eater, I wasn’t able to take advantage of the $10 bowl of crispy chicken wings après deal, but I was assured that they are out of this world. Some of my pals went for big steaming bowls of Pho, but I opted for the Peaceful Noodle Bowl (although the plant-based Pho sounded pretty delicious too). We grabbed some house pickles as well, to munch on whilst we were waiting; a decision I do not regret.
An hour later, we were fed, watered and feeling ready for a naprès. Yum Son après was a success, and definitely worth a trip down the mountain.
